About this episode
Burnout sends warnings long before it stops you. I got most of mine and ignored every one.
This episode is the honest version of what came before my breaking point: the chronic fatigue I explained away, the headaches, the irritability, the loss of anything that used to feel like joy. It also looks at the culture around all of it, where exhaustion gets treated as commitment and rest has to be earned.
You do not have to reach rock bottom before you are allowed to do something about it.
The physical warnings that are easiest to explain away Irritability and lost joy, and why those read as personality rather than symptoms Why isolation is a signal, and what checking in with yourself looks like

Welcome back, everyone. In this episode, I'll reflect on the early signs of burnout. that I missed or dismissed, helping you recognize your own warning signs before reaching breaking point. Before we begin today's episode, I want to remind you that I am not a mental health professional. This podcast is for information purposes only. If you feel affected by anything discussed in this episode, or suspect that you're experiencing burnout, or other adverse mental mental health conditions, please seek help from a licensed professional.
Imagine waking up one morning and feeling completely drained, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. You're exhausted before the day even begins. Things that once excited you, they feel meaningless. And no matter how much you rest, you never truly recover.
Now what if I told you that burnout doesn't just happen. It sends warnings. Subtle at first, but louder over time. The real question is, are you listening? Well, I wasn't. I ignored every single sign my body and mind gave me. I pushed through, thinking I was just stressed, and I could handle it. That burnout was something that happened to other people.
Today, I want to share parts of my story, not just to reflect, but to help you recognize the warning signs in yourself before burnout takes over your life. Let's have a look at the early warning signs I overlooked.
At first, it didn't feel like burnout. It just felt like life. A busy schedule. Demanding job. I told myself, this is normal. Everyone feels like this sometimes. The weekend would come along, and family life, which should have been, in focus, wasn't.
I just wanted to curl up in bed alone, without having to be part of conversations. I would be sitting there at family dinners, or out and about for excursions, but I was checked out,
and going with the flow. There in body, but absent in mind. I didn't want to be there, or be there for anyone or anything. I would consciously try to stop thinking about work, but the monkey mind in me didn't allow that.
I resented being there, or have to serve others. The day-to-day responsibilities I should have had were being picked up by my wife, which was unfair on her and the family unit.
But looking back, I can see all the signs were there. My body was screaming for help. Those signs, if we start with physical signs, which I ignored. The chronic fatigue.
No matter how much I slept, I woke up tired. But I told myself it was just a bad night's sleep. Or too much coffee. Or too little coffee. Have you ever felt like this?
The other physical signs, frequent headaches, and muscle pain. My shoulders were like bricks. I would go for a massage, for relief, and I would be told exactly that. They should have charged double for the work they had to do.
And my headaches persisted, and painkillers, yeah, they became my friend. But instead of asking why, I kept pushing. And of course, the sleep, at night, mind racing, waking up, mental to-do lists in my head.
And in the morning, it felt like I hadn't slept at all. Then over to the emotional and mental signs, which I ignored. I mean, the irritability, anxiety. Little things set me off.
A slow email reply. A screaming baby. A minor inconvenience. And the worst part, I didn't even recognize myself anymore. Because I'd lost joy in the things I used to love.
Music. One of my biggest passions. Didn't even move me. Even my beloved 90s playlists. Sport. Liverpool. Football club. Didn't excite me anymore. Conversations felt draining. I wasn't just tired. I was becoming numb.
If you've ever felt like you're just going through the motions, pay attention. This could be a sign. And of course, feel trapped and hopeless. I convinced myself I had no choice.
Just to keep going. This was just the way life was. I told myself, once this project's done, things will slow down. Spoiler alert, they didn't. My behavior was changing. And the signs that I ignored, well, working harder instead of resting. I mean, I was exhausted.
So instead of slowing down, I worked harder. I thought if I just pushed through, I'd feel better. But I wasn't fixing the problem. I was feeding it. I would avoid people and go into isolation.
Canceling plans. Not because I was busy. Because I had nothing left to give. Even when I had free time, I chose to be alone. It just felt easier. I remember when my wife noticed the exhaustion before I did.
She noticed the change. She didn't know what was happening. And we, as a couple, rarely had arguments. We started to disagree when my behavior was challenged. I didn't see it creep up. And she didn't know what was happening.
The irritability and anger was a big sign for me. Why I didn't see it sooner? Well, the lies I told myself. I thought burnout meant total collapse. You had to pass out, quitting, hitting rock bottom. But in reality, burnout is quiet.
It's a slow fade. And I was in denial. I had burned out before. And was aware of it. So why did it happen again? What stories do you tell yourself about exhaustion? Are you minimizing it like I did?
Well, let's talk about the culture that encourages burnout. We reward overwork. We glorify the grind, the hustle. And we wear exhaustion like a badge of honor. And I fell for it.
I thought taking a break meant I wasn't strong enough. But real strength isn't about pushing through. What I would tell my past self, if I could go back in time, I would say, listen to your body.
That exhaustion, that irritability, that numbness, it's not normal. And it's not a weakness. You don't have to reach rock bottom before you're allowed to rest. You're not lazy for slowing down. You're not weak for needing help. You are human.
The moment that finally made me accept burnout was real. And it wasn't just the time when my son was crying, asking me why I'm always sad. There were many signs, and some stand out more than others.
I mean, another example was my speech. It was beginning to stutter. And my short-term memory was really affected. I was not in control of myself. And this was a surreal feeling I'll never forget.
If any of this sounds familiar, don't ignore it, like I did. Pause, reflect, and ask yourself, am I running on empty? Because you deserve to take care of yourself before burnout forces you to.
And just a final thought. Burnout just doesn't happen. It sends warnings. The question is, are you listening? Take a moment today, just five minutes, check in with yourself, and ask, am I ignoring the signs?
